The team at Hamilton Janke Lawyers are delighted to announce that Ms Hannah Williams has been named as a Finalist for Law Student of the Year in the 2021 Women in Law Awards.

Hannah completed her Law Degree with First Class Honours. She also wrote a Submission Paper to the NSW Sentencing Council regarding Murder Sentencing (http://www.sentencingcouncil.justice.nsw.gov.au/Documents/Current-projects/Homicide/MU26.pdf), with these views subsequently relied upon in the Final Report handed down by the Sentencing Council in May of 2021. Her research paper on how life imprisonment in NSW violates Australia’s obligations under Articles 7 & 10 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights will also be submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Committee for consideration.

During her studies, Hannah also worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Newcastle Law School, worked part-time work with Hamilton Janke Lawyers, and undertook work experience at both the ODPP and Aboriginal Legal Service.

Hannah also demonstrated her proven acumen for advocacy and criminal law being a Grand Finalist in the 2020 Younes + Espiner Intervarsity Criminal Law Moot, as well as being a semi-finalist in the Kirby Moot in 2018, the Intervarsity Criminal Law Moot in 2019 and being a grand finalist and winner of the King & Wood Mallesons Senior Moot in 2018 and 2019.

Having worked closely with Hannah for some time now, James and Drew are both proud and excited to be in a position to support and mentor the next stage of Hannah’s career (which they have no doubt will be long lasting and illustrious).

James, Drew and the team at Hamilton Janke Lawyers remain committed to recognising the achievements of women in the law and challenging the inequality and misogynism faced by many in the legal industry.
